Dear Mavis,
Your card came on my birthday. I had a very happy day. Howard and Ruth came Saturday afternoon and brought a quart of oysters. Pop got some wieners so we had a good supper. I had baked a cake. Howard and Ruth gave me two pair of hose. Muriel came out for dinner Sunday and brought me a pair of hose. Harding gave me fifty cents. Pop took Dulcie and I to the show Monday night, so I think it was a swell birthday.
Dulcie hasn't finished the dress yet. I haven't exchanged the machine needles. Have been so busy - picked peanuts last week. Just pulled up half the patch. Am leaving the rest for a while.
I canned some beans today. Want to can some more tomorrow. I washed Monday. I didn't was any last week. The biggest job is drawing and carrying the water. I think if you still want to lend us the money we will have a pump put in. It would be nice. I don't know whether I can get Pop to agree to it. I only owe five more on the Frigidaire and can pay that this week.
They had a nice time at Ruby's shower. She received lots of handkerchiefs and a number of presents at the farewell party. The League is having a weiner roast in our pasture this coming Saturday night.
We received the pictures and they are all good. There are only seven. The one of Doris wasn't any good I guess. I want to have some more made from the exposures. Perhaps I'll just have them sent to you, which will be easier than sending these to you. They are too large to send in an envelope.
The scuppernongs are good now. I gathered a gallon this morning. Cotton is opening fast. We are going to have some picked next week. My late tomatoes are beginning to ripen. Dulcie is getting along very well with her French and typing.
I suppose you are getting your work lined up now so you can follow a routine. We miss you terribly. If only you had work nearer home. It is ironical when the need is so great here that you have to go so far away to do the same work which needs to be done here.
Lovingly,
Mother
PS: Thanks for the dress as a birthday gift.
