Thursday morning

[May 20, 1943-jlt]

Dear Mavis,

Received two letters this morning. I read the one you wrote Sunday night first. The second one left me a little nervous. I certainly hope it is nothing serious. Sure I want you to have the operation now, for the longer you put it off the more the danger increases.

I feel very badly about not being there with you. You have all the family close by. If you were here they couldn't be with you. Anyway by the time you receive this letter it will be over I hope.

I also hope someone will be thoughtful enough to wire me this afternoon. I am going by the postal to see. I am enclosing some blank checks for you to use. The expense is a secondary item in a case like this.

If anyone were to read the letters I write you, would know I was a farmer, for I always mention the weather. The results of the rain we had last week are about all gone. It is threatening rain now, so we may get it. We are getting along just fine chopping cotton and it looks good.

All the excitement over the weekend was that Evelyn called Mr. Rubenstein Friday afternoon asking him to tell us that they were sending Hiram across and that he wanted to see his Mama before he left. He wanted me to bring her over there. In about two hours she called Mr. Rubenstein saying not to come for they were coming home to see Mama before he left. Mama wanted me to call the girls to see if they wanted to see him. If so for them to come down on the eight o'clock train Saturday evening. They did come and they looked for Hiram and Evelyn Saturday night and Sunday but they didn't come. Ruthel wrote Mama this morning enclosing Evelyn's letter that she received yesterday morning. Evelyn hardly mentioned the phone call to Mr. Rubenstein. The girls are really mad about all the trouble she caused them. I suppose Evelyn should have called back explaining why they couldn't make the trip. In her letter she said they decided that they wouldn't have time to make the trip, for Hiram had to be back at the Camp at 6 AM Monday.

I saw show number two Monday night. It was "Air Force". It was a propaganda picture but well worth seeing. I hope by the time you read this you are feeling good if you had the operation. Tell Johnnie "Hello" for me. You might also kiss him for me.

With lots of love,

Ruel

I have to go to Cleveland this afternoon. I will carry this along and mail it, so maybe you will get it before Sunday. My mind is not working any too good right now so please excuse the mistakes and writing. If you should not get along as you should and want me to come, send a wire.
