This was apparently written to tell my mother about Dulcie and Buck's wedding - JLT

Sunday night,

March 2nd, 1947

Dear Mavis,

I know you will want a detailed account of the wedding, so I'll try my best to give it to you. The weather put on a spectacular show yesterday. It rained, sleeted and snowed. It became almost clear in the afternoon and the sleet melted. When we got up this morning the ground was covered with snow an inch deep. It began snowing again about eleven o'clock and continued until after one o'clock.

All of us went to Church for Sunday School and preaching except Dulcie. Ruth stayed with her to help her get dressed. I went to town Friday and bought me a new dark blue dress. Then I went yesterday and had my hair washed and waved. I had my Spring coat cleaned and wore the hat I bought last Spring. It looked well with my hair waved. I wore a corsage of white gardenias. Mrs Towell and Grandma Hartsell had corsages of white gardenias and Marilu's was the same. The preacher, Howard and Harding had a white carnation for boutinaires. Howard and Harding were handsome in blue suits. Marilu played fifteen minutes before the ceremony. Then the bride and groom came down the left aisle. They were a nice looking couple, Dulcie looked radient and was smiling. Her suit hat and everything looked just right. I gave her a pair of blue garters so she would have something blue. She borrowed a penny from Ruth so she would have something borrowed. She put the penny in her show. She wore an old pair of shoes which of course looked nice. So she had on somethng old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a penny in her shoe.

Well, they got through with the ceremony. Buck spoke the words so we could hear them, but Dulcie's were hardly audible. They left as soon as they got outside. I don't know where they went. It was snowing during the ceremony and when they left. The church was nearly full. Aunt Missouri, Lottie and Edna Lee, Uncle Charlie and Cora. Mr. and Mrs Harkey, Maury and Peggy Sapp, Mr. and Mrs Stewart, Mr. and Mrs Bounds and Frances. A number of Dulcie's girl friends from the office. Then the folks of our church and Gilead and kin folks. The church looked nice. There was a bowl of gardenias on the piano, a large basket of white gladiolas and ferns at either side of the alter. Then inside the alter were boxes of ferns. Mrs Curran decorated it. Dulcie had a purple throated orchid. Buck's suit is dark blue.

They bought a new Frigidaire yesterday. Hayden Joyner had his order in for one but in the meantime they bought another kind so he let them have this one. I took over Dulcie's building and loan , which was $200 so she was able to pay cash for it. It cost $227. We had to put it in the dinning room between ours and the wall. It justs fits in that space. It is a seven foot size just a little larger than ours. Dulcie and Buck didn't work Friday. She got paid just the same as if she worked.

I feel sad when I allow myself to think that Dulcie will no longer be with us, even though she will live near. It will never be the same. Through all our happiness about the wedding there was mingled a sadness, for Jo has been in Memorial Hospital since last Wednesday taking treatment for rheumatism. It is in her hips and they have weights attached too her foot to keep it straight. They are giving her penicillin every three hours. Muriel has been to see her every day and said she seemed to be feeling better yesterday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Harkey were going over to see her this afternoon and took some of the flowers from the church to her. Zula sent her a pot flower yesterday noon. Muriel was going over late this evening. Howard and Ruth are going over to see her tomorrow evening and Muriel and I are going with them. I don't know how long she will be over there. I hope not long. Buren's were here awhile this afternoon. Jerry had a new pair of long pants, his first long ones and a new pair of shoes for the wedding, also a new white shirt. Pop wore a white shirt and a new tie. I had his suit cleaned, polished his shoes, cut his hair and shaved him. He looked dressed up for once.

I had hoped Elwyn would get here, but he couldn't make it. He wrote last week and said if he could get Harding a new car he would be here sometime yesterday. Pop and I are going to pay you for the typewriter as a birthday gift to Harding. You know his birthday is the 5th (Wednesday). I had a good coconut cake today. I cut it yesterday so Dulcie could eat a piece. Mrs Towell invited her to eat supper with them last night. Mrs Towell said she was glad she would have a daughter as she had only boys. She didn't work several days last week and had a colored girl helping her clean up. I think she was as excited about the wedding as Buck was. Well, I don't know whether you can get the picture of the wedding from what I have written or not. Maybe you can imagine how it was. How I wish all of you could have been here.

Lots of love,

Mother
