Dear Mavis,

Your letter came Monday. Glad to hear from you. Harding, Doug, Pearson and myself went to Washington, left at 12 o'clock Thursday night and arrived in Washington at 9:30 Friday morning. It took us an hour to find Elwyn's place after we left Stewart's. Doug was sick all the way up there, but the rest of us made it OK. I didn't get very tired and felt fine all the time we were gone. Harding had his car checked Friday afternoon, then when Elwyn came from work we ate supper and Elwyn drove us around. We went to the Congressional Library, the Lincoln Memorial, and by several other places. It was raining so we only went into the Library and Lincoln Memorial. We stopped a while at Stewart's on our way back to Elwyn's. We started sightseeing Saturday morning about 9:30 Elwyn driving. We went to the Capitol first, all of them walked to the top except myself. I went nearly all the way but decided I would better not try to walk to the top. I wish now that I had gone all the way.

Doris and Delores had never been in the Capitol before. We went up in the monument. They all walked down except me. We saw the Jefferson Memorial. It is as large as the Lincoln Memorial, made of white marble and very beautiful.

We went to the zoo, and one of the museums. Drove out to Arlington, it was raining while we were there and Elwyn and I stayed in the car while the others went through Lee's house and saw the grave of the Unknown Soldier. We drove out to Great Falls about ten miles out from Washington and walked about a mile and a half to see the series of falls. They were grand but it was too far to walk. It reminded me of the time you took us to see the falls at Brevard. We stopped at Glen Echo on our way back. All of them rode the roller coaster except Delores and me. She wanted to ride with them but her mother didn't want her to, but when they got back she cried to go, so Harding went on and rode with her. She liked it and wanted to ride again. Harding said he could hardly stand it himself. We ate dinner and supper at a new eating place called "The Hot Spot". Elwyn knows every place and a lot of interesting facts about them. We went to the airport and saw the big planes land and take off. We didn't go in the White House. Night came too soon and we went to Elwyns, feeling we had had a full day. Sunday morning at the breakfast table I remarked that I wanted to go to church. Doris said "I'm not going to church". Delores spoke instantly and said she wasn't going. Elwyn said there was a church near where Ruby L. lived so I called her and told her we would be over. She had to go to work at twelve and we were only with her a little while. Elwyn went with me to church. Harding, Ruby L. and Doris went to have the car filled with gas and have a tire fixed. After churchwe went back to Elwyn's. Doris had a nice dinner. We ate and left for home shortly after. We arrived at 12 Sunday night.

Dulcie and Buck stayed here and did the work while I was away. I have been busy hoeing all this week. Everything is growing since it rained. I went to town today and paid for a double drain cabinet sink shich I had ordered from Sears. Harding couldn't bring it in his car so will have to take the trailer tomorrow and get it. It cost $91.40.

Tell Johnny I know we will enjoy the pepsies and will be ready for them.

Love,

Mother

PS: Harding is painting the house. Began yesterday.
