Letter from my grandmother in NC to my mother in MS written on March 21, 1948

Sunday night

March 21, 1948

Dear Mavis,

Your letter came Friday. So glad to hear from you. Spring has finally arrived. Yesterday was like a summer day and today has been warm. Howard, Ruth, Ronnie, Buck and Dulcie, Muriel and Doug were here for dinner. Harding came home Thursday night but went to the beach Friday night. Said he would be home tonight. He has to go back to Raleigh Saturday to register but says he will come back home for Easter Sunday. It seems foolish to do so much extra driving.

Mrs. A.B. Cook has a baby boy. Reece is still using crutches. We had a good crowd at church today. Muriel and Dulcie taught the little children to sing "I washed my hands this morning so very clean and white". They sang it all together and seemed to enjoy doing it. I would like to hear Johnny and Joe Lee sing. Tell Joe Lee to sing with the children at church. Jewell and Carolyn sang at church today and Jerry too. Tomorrow is Jerry's birthday and just two weeks from today will be Doug's, and then it won't be long until Ronnie's and not very long until someone else has a birthday. I wonder who it is! I suppose Johnny and Joe Lee are looking forward to coloring eggs. Are you going to have an egg hunt at the church on Saturday?

Ronnie was cute as could be today. He is not walking yet, which worries Ruth quite a bit. Ruth made 18 blouses last week, her mother works the button holes and embroiders them. Dulcie and I are going to Howard's Tuesday night and take care of Ronnie while Howard and Ruth go skating. Buck goes to school and can take us by there.

Buck bought a new "Laundry Mat" washing machine out Friday afternoon and had it installed when Dulcie came home from work. They had planned to get a Bendix but this is the kind Wensil(?) sells. It is almost like a Bendix but doesn't have to be bolted to the floor. It is nicer looking. Buck installed it, so he saved that cost. They washed some clothes Friday night and washed more Saturday. Also did Mrs. Towell's washing,. Dulcie said she herself hadn't done any washing for three weeks so they had a lot. I have another fresh cow. I hope we can get some plowing done this week.

Happy Easter,

Love

Mother
