[probably the first letter Mom wrote to Dad - she wasn't even sure how to spell his name. I think they had their first date in March. She apparently wrote this while attending a church conference]-jlt

Dear Rual,
I couldn't decide whether your name was spelled with an 'a' or an 'e'- I'll have to find out when I get home.
We had a nice trip yesterday. It only took a little over three hours to drive. The car actually decided to be nice and not have a flat or show off in any other way. It didn't rain so we didn't get wet. Mrs. Thompson, the lady that came with me, was such pleasant company.
I wonder now why I didn't get some more sleep before I left home. It was about eleven o'clock last night before we went to bed. My roommate had a nightmare during the night and a pesky old mouse paid us a visit - in fact he had a party in our wastepaper basket and then decided to gnaw a bit of heavier food from my suitcase. Outside these disturbances I did sleep pretty well.
I have a sweet little roommate. She is younger than I. When she found out my home was in North Carolina we immediately had something in common, for her boyfriend is in Fort Bragg, NC. She said they were to have been married in April but "he's in the Army now".
Kenneth Tucker said Ray went to Vicksburg over the weekend and Lewis met him there. [Ray was best man in mom and dad's wedding, Lewis was his future wife-jlt] He said he got in Arcola at 2:30 Monday morning and Kenneth said he had a time waking him before he left. I think he went to Vicksburg for his boss's wedding.
It is about breakfast time- 7 o'clock. I imagine you have been up for hours and are about ready for that first coco-cola. I really do miss you - you know I can't look out and see you pass in the truck - but I'll be seeing you Sunday.
Love,
Mavis
