Thursday night
Dear Ruel,
Well, our little son is 1/2 year old today. I did get your letter saying that you remembered it. I'm proud we've gotten him this far along and pray that we may give tim the things he needs for growth from day to day as he grows older. The thing of having a child to rear is no easy matter is it! I'm discovering that its a job I'd rather share than try to do alone.
The weather here today has begun to feel like Mississippi. I'm surely glad it is getting warmer. We took Johnnie to the Home Demonstration Club meeting this afternoon. I was prepared for the worst but he really acted nice. He kicked and played and when the speaker started talking he listened. I had a bottle for him to go to sleep on, but after he took it he was still wide awake. We went past Buren's a little while after the meeting. Jewel was sitting in the kitchen by the high chair when we went in. Wherever Victoria puts her she stays - some people have nice babies don't they? Johnnie went to sleep soon after we got home and is down for the night I hope.
I thought you would be finding out there were some good shows on. No doubt you went to see Yankee Doodle Dandy too. Iceland has been on in Concord, but I haven't been to a show yet. Gas has been too scarce to go out much for pleasure - especially this far out in the country. Papa said he had a little extra when rationing started, but he is gradually using it up. We are going to visit Ruth and Howard tomorrow if we are all well. I think I'll be all right now. I'm still a little hoarse, but the cold in my chest is clearing up.
Could you go past and get the gift Mrs. Whitesides left at Mrs. Priestly's? I hate to tell her I'm going to leave it there until I return. I think its something for the baby. If its something he could use now you could mail it. I have no idea what it could be.
Please take time to look at the garden and tell me how it's doing. Perhaps Mrs. Turner could supply the information though. I want to get home before canning time - if I have an operation I don't know how that will work out.
Tomorrow I will have been here tow weeks. Time passes so fast and every day I get so little done. I was a lot of the people I wanted to see this afternoon though.
How is your hospital patient?
Love,
Mavis
