Sunday night

Dear Ruel,

Your letter arrived on Saturday and since I haven't written since Friday you are going to be disappointed about three days hence.  There is just so little time to write here.

Hope you have had some rain before now.  It is dry here too, but not to the point of "a drought".  It looks like it might rain tonight though.  I'm glad you have been watering the tomato plants.  Don't know what we would do for tomatoes if they didn't live.  I put a lot of manure under them so don't suppose they could stand much hot weather.  Papa said he could imagine how the dry weather was the chief topic of conversation. - you remember we had just had a rain when he arrived there last summer.

Don't know how I could write this much of a letter without mentioning Johnnie.  He has been doing fine for the last two days.  Mama kept him for me to go to Charlotte Saturday.  When we came back Buren got into the house before I did and gave him a box of blocks he had bought for him.  When I got in I started talking to him, thinking he would be glad to see me, but he wouldn't even look up from the blocks.  He had to be rocked to sleep later though and acted as if he wanted a little extra attention.  This morning we took him to church and he acted fine although we only had Sunday School.  It was warm this afternoon, as I carried him along when we went for a walk in the pasture.  He is asleep now.  For the last few nights he has been doing good - I give him a bottle at 9:30 and he sleeps until six. .  This will suit us better, won't it.

My trip to Charlotte left my pocketbook flat.  We went at 9:30 and came back around five.  Had a good dinner at the S&W Cafeteria with Howard footing the bill.  Victoria, Ruth, and I looked at dresses, hats, etc all the time with the exception of the time we went with the menfolk through the ten cent store.  Believe it or not I bought a hat, and didn't like it before I got home because it cost too much.  I never could decide on a dress, but Victoria bought one and sold it to me after we got home.  She said she didn't really need it and it looked good on me.  You wouldn't imagine we wear the same size would you.  I looked right dressed up this morning.

I'm going to the Doctor Tuesday morning.  Seems that I can't get that done and off my mind.  The one in Concord is a Woman's specialist, but I believe Mississippi Doctors have a better reputation.  I'll be glad to get it over with.  Today I was talking to Thelma Joyner (the young couple we visited in Concord) and she said she would like to go along with me and go on to Texas to visit her husband.  She didn't think she could make the trip in two weeks though. I told her it would be mighty nice to have someone to travel with me.

I'm glad you think it was worthwhile for Miss Shinn to become Mrs. Turner, if for no other reason than to remind you to pay bills, get clean shirts, etc.  I told Evelyn this afternoon that if I didn't soon get back to cooking I was going to forget how it was done.  I'm anxious to come back home and get Johnnie back too.  I'm enjoying my visit now and want to stay long enough to last for awhile.  Every evening and morning I get hoarse, but I'm feeling good.

Don't know what you all have been eating if you haven't bought any groceries since I've been away.  The cupboard must be getting pretty bare by now.  Maybe I had better come home to see that you all don't starve.

Is Ruthel's school out yet?

Guess I had better sign off for tonight and join Johnnie in sleepy land Wonder what show you are taking in tonight!  Wish I was with you.

Lots of love,

Mavis
