Monday afternoon

May 24, 1943

Dear Ruel,

It was very nice to get your two letters this morning - good things usually come if we wait long enough.  I'm glad you didn't have to wait very long after receiving my letter until you got Muriel's wire saying that I had stood the operation all right.  I'm feeling better today than I have felt yet.

Johnnie is about as much a stranger to me as he is to you.  I haven't seen him since last Friday.  They all tell me he is growing so that I won't know him when I see him again.  They say he is satisfied with any of them and doesn't seem to mind me being gone.  We had better get our family together again or our son won't know his own parents.  I know that you will surely feel relieved when that time comes.  Are you beginning to feel like a bachelor?

Dulcie had her operation this morning.  She woke up about 45 minutes after they brought her back to her room which is just across from mine.  They will move her in with me tomorrow when my roommate leaves.  Its impossible to get private rooms the hospital is so crowded.  Dulcie seemed to be suffering so when she woke up, saying "Oh, My stomach!" They said she didn't act any worse than I.  I'll be glad when she gets over those first terrible days.

It was rather a messed up affair that Hiram and Evelyn got you all into.  Did Hiram really have to leave Ft. McClellan?  Guess Ruthel will be home soon.

As long as we've been away, guess the cotton will be in bloom by the time we get home.  Hope you got the rain you needed.  I can't believe you are having cabbage from the garden, so I better quit thinking about all that stuff or I'll get homesick.

Since the hospital is near Winecoff School, I'm seeing a lot of my school friends.  The principal came in to see me yesterday.  I showed him your and Johnnie's picture.

Lots of love,

Mavis

PS: Johnnie has gained 1/2 pound.
