[Mom had seen a doctor while visiting in NC and her recommended that she have an operation for an ovarian cyst immediately, so she stayed in NC for about 3 weeks recovering - this is a letter to Dad in Miss. - about half the letter is missing where a mouse chewed it up, but I'll copy what I can - jlt]

Dear Ruel,

If I didn't have some extra special news I wouldn't write this afternoon. I haven't received a letter from you in three days. Maybe you are too down-hearted to write.

Believe it or not you are going to have Johnnie and I back before another week passes. The doctor says I am well and can make the trip home next week. As soon as I could get to a telephone I phoned the Train station and asked about reservations for next Friday. That would put us in Memphis at 6:40 Saturday morning. The station agent said he would find out by tomorrow. [ this is the missing section - apparently there was a lot of uncertainty about travel with the war going on]

... possibly I might come earlier in the week if that train is full. Be on the lookout for a letter or wire.

Johnnie is doing alright. For several days it was so hot he fretted a lot but a rain has cooled off the atmosphere. He will probably be more trouble coming home than he was coming up here, but maybe I can manage him. He isn't used to me tending to him yet.

Hope to be seeing you soon,

Love,

Mavis
