Saturday night, August 27

Dear Mother,

I'll try to write a letter if I'm not too sleepy to think.  The children are all asleep early for once.  I had a few minutes to look over some new magazines and that just made me sleepier.  My day usually starts at 5 o'clock and I don't think there has been any let up today.  Jane still clings to me and doesn't want me to get out of her sight.  This afternoon I left her on the porch playing while I straightened out the living room.  I was rejoicing over her being so good, but when I went out to see about her she was playing in a dish of dog food I had left out there.  She had it all over her, but I hope she didn't eat much.  It was some pieces of corn bread and sour milk and I think had ants crawling all in it.

Jan can still smile if anyone finds time to smile at him.  They both play for Ruel's attention when he comes in and they hear his voice.  Jan drinks his milk better than he did up there and sleeps better too, however I can't tell that he is growing any.  This has been a day when Joe Lee and Johnny keep asking "What can I do?"  Jerry was over yesterday and played with them and they think they can't play by themselves after they are used to someone.  Willie also played with them yesterday afternoon.  We got them a load of sand at the river but they are getting tired of that now.

Wednesday morning I decided to go to town and get a few things and carry the children.  When I was ready to come home the batteries on the car were dead and the car wouldn't start and both babies were crying.  I went to the service station and got them to push the car off, but I about decided to keep the babies at home from now on.  We did go to Malvina one afternoon.  Mrs Tucker and Eva Dale were glad to see the babies and held them awhile.  We went down to Logan's and the little boy down there wouldn't play with Johnny but couldn't stay away from Jane and Jan.

I received your letter this week.  Glad you and Muriel got to go to the wedding.  It was cool here last week end, too.  Johnny thinks of something he left up there every now and then.  I must have left one of the pink baby dresses on the radio table - at least I can't find one of them.  We are still enjoying tomatoes.  I've been putting some okra in the locker from our patch.

I must close as I'm still about to drop off to sleep.

Love,

Mavis
